The Station
Inn
Station Hotel is about two hundred years old, being known for half that time as Station Inn. Then it was a single fronted house with a passage. About a hundred years ago, the Inn was made double fronted and became Station Hotel. Obviously now the original name is in use. During the whole of its history, the hotel has known of only four tenants. beginning with Mr Richard Genner on October 11th 1891.
From then on the hotel has been passed through the family. A local customer, whom has lived in the village all his life, took us through the periods of different ownership of the Station Inn.
1891 to 1947- the Genner family
1947 to 1977 - Ronnie Birdsal
1977 to 1982 - Ivan Sugden
1982 to 1985 - Terry Wood (Involved also in Dog track racing)
1985 to 1988 - Darren and Lindsey Clark
1988 to 1994 - Dave Riley and Christine Spicer
1994 to present - Hung On Chan and Mandy Tlioi
Before the days of buses, Station Hotel was a busy centre. Especially on York market days (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays). In those days farmers from all over the villages in the area came to Tollerton in their traps, left their horses and traps at the Station Hotel and journeyed to York by rail. Saturday was the big market day when farmers and their wives took produce such as butter and eggs.
We have heard that the Station Hotel was formerly the headquarters of cattle dealers who had a room there for business purposes. Cattle from the district were assembled in the field across the road awaiting cattle trucks coming to the station; they were then taken by rail to Leeds and Wakefield cattle markets.
Tollerton
The word Tollerton is of Scandinavian or Norse origin. Most authorities believe that Tollerton comes form the word Toll, a tax or custom paid for passage. It was the tolling-ton, or the town where the tolls were taken, on the border of the Forest.
In Saxon times Tollerton was part of The Forest of Galtres which was famous for the hunting of wild boar, wolves and bears by both ancient British and Saxon kings. There were bands of robbers lurking within the forest, consequently the journey into York was dangerous, and it thought that at Tollerton. a tax was paid for an armed guard.
Other authority suggest the name Tollerton may come from another Norse word Thollr meaning a fir tree but afterwards applied to trees generally. Many places take their names from trees. It is not known who the first people were who settled in the village. It is said that the Romans had flat-bottomed boats on the Kyle In 1815 the bulk of a vessel was found about ten to twelve feet below the foundation of the water mill. It is thought to believe that this vessel was a Viking ship. At any rate the Romans appear to have been at Aldwark and it is thought that there was a Roman road through Alne park near Carnebridge (or Caren Bridge).
The Romans
left Britain to defend their homeland. Picts and Scots caused trouble by their
raids, and Saxons were called in by the native kings. Probably some of the Saxons
who turned raiders, sailed up the Ouse and then the Kyle and eventually formed
a settlement at Tollerton.
The sea-farers never liked to be far from water. They formed their settlements
near to rivers on high ground. The number of Norse names of fields suggests
that the Saxons were the main founders of Tollerton.
